It is easy to get lost in the sea of birth books, blogs and resources so we thought we would put together an easy resource list for you!
Here are some of the tools we encourage you to look into in order to achieve a positive birth experience.
Both Emma and I have used a hypnobirthing approach in our births. Emma with her first and me with my second. I think a lot of people are put off by the word “hynpno” and picture some kind of cult where people are out of their minds. This is not what it is about at all!
Hypnobirthing is all about reducing your level of fear associated with birth and tapping into learnt techniques to go within yourself, work with your body and birth your baby with ease. Doesn’t this sounds great?
A big part of hypnobirthing is using the breath. It is important you practice the breathing techniques in the lead up to your labour so that your body knows what it needs to do when it comes time to birth your baby. These techniques are invaluable and so easy to learn. In fact they have helped me in every aspect of my life from coping with anxious situations to becoming a calmer parent.
There are a lot of hypnobirthing resources out there for you! Some you-tubing should bring up some great video’s and tutorials you can learn some breathing exercises from.
The book that Emma and I both read and found played a big part in our birth education was Marie Mongan’s guide to hypnobirthing. This book goes through birth throughout history, which is really really interesting! It also gives a lot of information about how fear and anxiety inhibits our bodies natural ability to birth effectively. As well as giving you all the practical tools and exercises you need (and a CD too!).
There are also face to face hypnobirthing courses you can do such as the ones run by Hynobirthing Australia.
I can’t speak personally for calm birth but do know A LOT of people who have used this method and achieved wonderful birth experiences.
Calmbirth actually stemmed from hypnobirthing so a lot of the techniques actually overlap. When you do a Calmbirth class you also get given a CD to listen to as well.

Independant childbirth classes
I cannot speak for all independent child birthing classes however as they all have different training and offer a differing approaches. However I have done Anna Siebert’s course online and can seriously vouch for it! To read more about why childbirth classes are important and more on Anna’s course visit this post.
Pregnancy Yoga is a very practical way to prepare for childbirth. Again not all programs are created equally so it is important to try a few out and see what you like. A good pregnancy yoga class will incorporate a bit of birth education and give you some practical “moves” to use while you are in labour. I wouldn’t recommend doing only a pregnancy yoga class, but pairing it with some other kind of birth education to give yourself the best possible chance of achieving the experience you want!

Books and audio
There are some AWESOME and not so awesome books out there available to you! But if reading is not your thing, maybe try out an audio book and listen for half an hour each night while in bed 🙂

If you are anything like me and are so busy that you do not have time to sit down and read a book then an audio program may be more up your alley! Kim Newing has created the most divine scared birthing audio program that is both relaxing and empowering. As a pregnant mumma there is something so special about laying in bed connecting to your baby and going inwards. And the best thing about an audio program is you can actually have it playing throughout your labour as well! I honestly cannot recommend this program highly enough!
